Wood Painting Services

We handle every timber painting and finishing task across the area. Timber requires the right preparation, the right product, and the right process. Done correctly, a painted or stained timber finish lasts a decade. Done poorly, it fails within two seasons.

Interior Hardwood

Hardwood joinery is a feature of period properties throughout Pilton, Bear Street, and Barnstaple town centre. Skirtings, dado rails, picture rails, window boards, and original staircase components all require careful preparation and appropriate paint or finish. We hand-apply satinwood and eggshell on interior hardwood, working with the grain and building up coats evenly. Hardwood does not accept paint in the same way as softwood. We allow full curing time between coats to prevent drag and lifting.

Exterior Timber

Exterior timber in North Devon faces salt air, Atlantic rain, and significant UV exposure, particularly at coastal properties in Braunton, Ilfracombe, and Croyde. We use flexible exterior coatings rated for coastal exposure on cladding, gates, sheds, and outbuildings. Where timber has begun to weather, we stabilise the surface before applying finish. Our exterior painting page covers all exterior surfaces including timber, masonry, and render.

Staining and Varnishing

Staining preserves the natural grain of timber while adding colour depth and protection. Varnishing provides a clear, durable barrier against moisture and abrasion. We apply water-based and oil-based stains depending on the timber species and intended use. Interior floors and staircases in Barnstaple town centre Victorian properties often suit a deep oak or walnut stain to complement the original character. Exterior gates and garden structures suit a penetrating oil-based system that feeds the timber rather than forming a brittle surface film.

The right primer is the step most DIY timber jobs skip — and the main reason they fail early. We never skip it.

Stripping, Restoration, and Bespoke Joinery

Decades of paint build-up obscure original moulding profiles and prevent new coatings from bonding correctly.

Stripping and Restoration

We strip original joinery using chemical removers, hot air, and hand tools, choosing the method that best protects the timber profile. Period cornices, dado rails, and door surrounds in Pilton and Barnstaple town centre can be returned to their original clarity once stripped. After stripping, we assess the timber condition and advise on the best finish before proceeding.

Bespoke Joinery

Fitted alcove units, library shelving, and bespoke kitchen joinery require the same finish quality as any other painted surface in the room. We paint bespoke joinery in situ or, where better access allows a superior finish, in a temporary work area before fitting. MDF and softwood components each need specific primer. We match colour exactly to existing woodwork and advise on sheen levels that work practically for storage and kitchen environments. Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

We inspect all timber surfaces, identifying rot, paint failure, bare grain, and any structural issues. Timber needing repair or replacement is flagged before painting starts.

2. Preparation

Surfaces are sanded, stripped where necessary, filled, and cleaned. Knots in softwood are sealed to prevent bleed-through. Bare timber gets the correct primer for the species and intended coating.

3. Priming

Every bare or stripped surface is primed before finish coats. This is the step most DIY timber jobs skip, and the main reason they fail early.

4. Painting or Finishing

We apply the specified system, whether paint, stain, or varnish, in the correct number of coats for the exposure level and timber type. Interior work is done in controlled conditions. Exterior work is scheduled around dry weather.

5. Inspection

We check coverage, consistency, and any areas where the finish needs a final touch before packing up. Windows and floors are unmasked and cleaned on completion.

What Drives the Cost

Interior timber painting typically costs £150 to £600 per room, depending on the amount of joinery and its condition. Three things drive the price: condition (timber requiring stripping or significant repair before painting adds preparation time and cost), timber species and profile (hardwood and complex moulded profiles take longer than standard softwood skirtings), and coating type (specialist systems for exterior coastal exposure or interior hardwood floors cost more than standard satinwood, but last significantly longer).

Typical Ranges

Interior room woodwork (skirtings, architraves, window board): £150 to £350 depending on room size and profile complexity. Exterior cladding or garden timber structure (holiday let, Braunton or Croyde): priced on survey, typically £400 to £900.
