Front Door Painting Services
Your front door takes more punishment than any other painted surface. Atlantic weather, salt air from the coast, and daily use all accelerate exterior paint failure. Doors here age faster than almost anywhere in England.

Timber Front Doors
Original timber front doors are common in Pilton’s Victorian terraces and period properties across Braunton and Ilfracombe. Timber doors expand and contract with North Devon’s damp climate. We strip back to sound timber, repair any rot, apply the correct primer, and finish with durable exterior gloss or satin.
uPVC and Composite Front Doors
Many homes in Roundswell, Whiddon Valley, and Landkey have uPVC or composite doors. Standard paint will not bond to uPVC. We use specialist systems designed for plastic and composite surfaces. Colour changes from white to anthracite, black, or any RAL colour are straightforward with the right process.
Colour Selection
Choosing a front door colour is one of the highest-visibility decisions for a Barnstaple home. We bring colour swatches and advise on what works with rendered, stone, and brick facades. We can match Farrow and Ball, Little Greene, and standard trade ranges.
We know how to prepare and finish front doors that hold up to North Devon conditions.
Preparation and Hardware
Preparation is the difference between a front door that lasts and one that peels before the next winter.
Preparation and Priming
We remove flaking paint, key slick surfaces, repair cracks and splits, and apply the primer specific to the door material. On coastal properties within reach of Croyde or Ilfracombe, we use primers with added resistance to salt and moisture. For a full exterior project, see Barnstaple Decorators’ exterior painting service.
Hardware and Knockers
Letter boxes, knockers, handles, and numerals all need protecting during painting. We mask hardware carefully rather than removing it where possible. Glass fanlights and sidelights are masked before any paint goes near them. For matching window frames, see our window frame painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We check the door material, existing paint condition, hardware, and any rot or damage. Doors with structural rot are flagged. Repairs need completing before painting will hold.
2. Stripping and Preparation
Failing paint is removed. Surfaces are sanded, filled, and cleaned. On timber doors, bare areas are treated with preservative before priming.
3. Priming
The correct primer for the door material is applied. Timber gets timber primer, uPVC gets specialist adhesion primer, and metal gets rust-inhibiting primer. This step is critical.
4. Finish Coats
Two coats of exterior gloss or satin. We work in dry weather only. Paint applied ahead of rain will not cure correctly. We monitor the forecast and plan accordingly.
5. Final Check
Hardware is replaced or unmasked. The door is checked to open and close freely. We walk you through the finished work before leaving.
