Masonry Painting Services
We work on every masonry surface found in the area. Rendered walls on Roundswell estates, exposed stone on Pilton’s Victorian terraces, brick on Sticklepath semis. Barnstaple Decorators knows which coating each surface needs and prepares every surface properly before a drop of paint goes on.

Rendered Walls
Rendered masonry is the most common exterior surface in Barnstaple’s modern estates and 1970s–1990s housing stock. Atlantic weather and salt air accelerate surface erosion on render. Hairline cracks, surface staining, and hollow patches all need addressing before painting. We hack back loose material and fill cracks with a compatible filler. A masonry stabiliser is applied where needed before the first coat. A properly prepared render surface holds paint for years longer than one painted straight over deterioration.
Exposed Brick
Exposed brick appears on older properties throughout Barnstaple and the surrounding villages. Not all brick accepts masonry paint without preparation. Efflorescence, salt bloom, and residual moisture need treating before coating. We clean the surface and neutralise active salt deposits. We use a breathable masonry paint that allows the wall to release moisture without blistering. We do not apply impermeable coatings to solid brick walls.
Stone Facades
Stone facades are common on properties throughout Pilton, Ilfracombe, and the older parts of Barnstaple town centre. Natural stone is porous and requires a breathable coating that does not trap moisture. We specify lime-wash or breathable masonry paints appropriate to the stone type. For properties in conservation areas or those with listed building designations, we check coating compatibility before committing to any product.
Breathable Coatings and Biological Growth
Solid-wall properties and coastal properties need specialist treatment before any paint goes on.
Breathable Coatings
Solid-wall properties built before 1920 need coatings that allow moisture movement through the fabric. Modern waterproof masonry paints look attractive, but they can cause serious damage to older stone and brick. They trap damp inside the wall, leading to deterioration over time. We use breathable masonry paint systems across all pre-1920 properties in the area. The finish looks identical to standard masonry paint. The difference is that the wall stays dry and the coating lasts.
Biological Growth Treatment
Algae, moss, and lichen are common on north-facing walls and coastal properties throughout North Devon. Growth must be treated before painting, not painted over. We apply a mould treatment, allow time for it to work, then remove dead growth before surface preparation begins. Painting over untreated growth pushes paint failure within one to two seasons. We treat biological growth as a standard part of every exterior masonry job.

Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the full masonry surface: crack mapping, moisture readings where needed, and an assessment of any biological growth. Ilfracombe and Braunton properties often need additional attention given salt air exposure.
2. Preparation
Cracks are filled, loose material is removed, and growth is treated. We do not skip preparation steps to save time.
3. Priming and Stabilising
Porous or friable surfaces receive a stabiliser coat before painting. This is what prevents the top coat from being absorbed unevenly.
4. Painting
We apply two coats of breathable masonry paint using brush, roller, or spray depending on surface area and access. Spray application on large unbroken surfaces gives a more uniform finish.
5. Final Check
We check all edges, window reveals, and soffits. Touch-ups are done on site before we leave.
Masonry Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices below are estimates only. Every job is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Cost
Exterior masonry painting on a typical three-bedroom semi-detached in Roundswell or Whiddon Valley typically costs £800 to £1,500, including full preparation and two coats. Surface area is the primary driver: a detached house with four elevations costs significantly more than a mid-terrace. Surface condition adds time for biological growth, cracked render, or moisture damage. Access requirements for high gables or inaccessible elevations carry an access surcharge.
Typical Ranges
Terraced or semi-detached house (Pilton or Sticklepath): £600 to £1,000 for front elevation and gables. Detached house with four elevations (Roundswell or Landkey): £1,200 to £2,000 depending on height and surface condition. Coastal property (Braunton, Ilfracombe, Croyde): add 10 to 20 percent for additional surface preparation given salt air exposure.
