Why Choose Barnstaple Decorators

Clean lines at cornicing and ceiling roses are the hardest part of the job. We cut in by hand with a fine brush, skipping masking tape, and use breathable primer on original lime plaster to prevent the patchy absorption that ruins otherwise good work.

Fixed price from the first quote. No unexpected additions.
Fully Insured
Full public liability cover on every job.
Highly Recommended
Most of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals.
Ceiling Painting Services
Ceilings are often the last thing homeowners think about and the first thing that looks wrong when the job is done badly. Streaky roller marks and uneven coverage around coving are common results of rushed ceiling work. We paint ceilings as a full task, not an afterthought.

Smooth Ceiling Painting
A smooth ceiling needs even primer coverage, correct roller speed, and overlapping wet edges. In Barnstaple’s Victorian and Edwardian properties, many ceilings have original lime plaster. We use a breathable primer on old plaster before applying the finish coat.
Artex and Textured Ceilings
Artex ceilings are common in North Devon homes built between the 1960s and 1990s. We use foam rollers designed for textured surfaces. We do not remove Artex unless specifically requested — painting in place gives a fresh result quickly and at lower cost.
Cornicing and Ceiling Roses
Original cornicing and ceiling roses in Barnstaple’s period properties add character and value. We do not rely on masking tape alone close to intricate plaster profiles. A fine-tipped brush, patience, and good natural light are what get a clean cut at cornicing.
We paint ceilings before walls in any room so drips land on unpainted surfaces. Call 01271 444479 to arrange a site visit and written quote.
Water Damage and High Ceilings
A water stain from a past leak bleeds through standard emulsion no matter how many coats are applied. Victorian and Georgian properties in Pilton often have ceiling heights of ten to fourteen feet.
Water Damage and Staining
We apply a stain-blocking primer (shellac-based or oil-based) before any finish coat goes over a stained area. The leak must be fixed before we start. We check that the ceiling is dry before priming. For a full room repaint that includes the ceiling, see our bedroom painting page.
High Ceilings
We use lightweight scaffold towers or hop-up platforms on high ceilings — not ladders alone for full-ceiling work at height. Access equipment costs are included in the quote. For interior painting across all rooms, see our interior painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Assessment
We inspect the ceiling for cracks, staining, mould, and plaster condition. We identify any water damage and check it is fully dry before proceeding.
2. Stain Treatment
Water-stained areas are primed with stain-blocking primer. Mould is treated with fungicidal wash before any coating is applied. We allow dwell time and check the surface is dry.
3. Preparation
Cracks are filled, loose plaster is stabilised, and surfaces are lightly sanded where needed. We apply the correct primer to each surface type — breathable primer on old lime plaster, standard on modern plasterboard.
4. Paint Application
Two finish coats are standard. We maintain a wet edge throughout to prevent lap marks. Textured ceilings get adequate coverage into valleys between passes.
5. Cornicing and Detail Work
All junction cutting at coving, ceiling roses, and wall-ceiling joins is done by hand with a fine brush. We check every section before moving to the next surface.
Ceiling Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Cost
Ceiling area and height directly affect the price — a large Victorian reception room with a twelve-foot ceiling has considerably more area than a modern bedroom ceiling. Surface condition matters: water staining and damaged Artex add repair time. Cornicing, ceiling roses, and coving add hand-cutting time.
Typical Ranges
Single bedroom ceiling (modern, smooth): £100 to £200. Living room ceiling (modern, including stain treatment): £180 to £300. Period reception room ceiling (Victorian, cornicing, high ceiling): £300 to £500. Full-house ceilings (3 to 4 bedroom property): £900 to £2,000.
More Services
Ceiling painting is often combined with a full bedroom painting or hallway painting project. For whole-house pricing, see our interior painting page.
