Hallway Painting Services
A hallway is the most used space in any home, and the hardest to paint well. Narrow corridors, high stair walls, multiple door frames and architraves, scuff zones along the lower walls.

Hallway Walls and Ceiling
We paint hallway ceilings before walls. We work from the far end toward the front door, always maintaining a wet edge. On period North Devon properties, original lime plaster needs a breathable primer before the finish coat.
Dado Rails and Picture Rails
Victorian and Edwardian hallways in Barnstaple’s town centre and Pilton often have dado rails at approximately one metre height. Painting above and below the dado rail in two complementary shades is a classic approach that works particularly well in narrow hallways.
Staircase Walls
Stair walls are among the most technically demanding surfaces in any home. A clean line where the stair wall meets the ceiling requires patience and a steady hand. We work from the top of the staircase down. See our staircase painting page for balustrades, spindles, and newel posts.
We know the stock in Barnstaple’s Victorian terraces in Pilton, the tall stair wells in town centre properties, and the practical narrow corridors of family homes in Sticklepath and Newport.
Scuff-Resistant Finishes and Narrow Hallways
Hallways take more physical contact than any other room. The right finish makes a significant difference to long-term durability.
Scuff-Resistant Finishes
We recommend eggshell or satin finish on hallway walls. These clean up more easily, resist marking better, and hold up to routine wiping. The difference in washability between flat matt and eggshell is significant in a high-traffic area.
Narrow Hallway Solutions
Narrow Victorian terraced hallways present practical access challenges. We bring compact step ladders and slim drop cloths. Lighter paint colours in narrow hallways increase perceived width. For a full interior repaint covering the hallway and every room, see our interior painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Assessment
We measure the hallway, note ceiling height, identify the stair wall extent, and assess surface condition. We note all period features needing individual attention.
2. Preparation
Cracks are filled and sanded. Loose plaster is stabilised. Appropriate primer is applied. Dado rail and picture rail woodwork is sanded and primed separately.
3. Ceiling Painting
Ceiling is painted before walls. We maintain a wet edge throughout and cut in at coving by hand.
4. Wall Painting
Walls are painted after the ceiling is dry. Two finish coats as standard. Lower zone below the dado rail gets eggshell or satin finish for durability.
5. Woodwork
Door frames, architraves, skirting boards, dado and picture rails are painted last. Two to three coats on woodwork with sanding between coats.
Hallway Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Cost
Hallways vary enormously in complexity. Stair wall height, number of door frames, and period features are the three main cost drivers. A Victorian terrace with a tall stair well, dado rail, and multiple door frames takes considerably longer than a small modern entrance hall.
Typical Ranges
Small modern entrance hall (good condition, no staircase): £200 to £350. Victorian terraced hallway (staircase walls, dado rail, multiple doors): £550 to £900. Full hallway, staircase, and landing (period property, all woodwork): £800 to £1,400.
