Pebbledash Painting Services in Barnstaple
Pebbledash is a rough exterior finish where small stones are pressed into a wet render coat. It demands a different approach from smooth render — a long-pile masonry roller worked in carefully so paint fills every crevice.
How Pebbledash Is Painted
Conventional short-pile rollers skim the surface and leave the recesses unpainted. We use a long-pile masonry roller to flood the surface, then work the paint in with a brush to ensure full coverage in the deeper pockets.
This takes longer than smooth surface painting but is the only method that produces a finish free of dry patches and pinholes. For large elevations, airless spray can be used, followed by back-rolling.
Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface
The aggregate traps biological material: moss, algae, lichen, and general grime in its crevices. Paint applied directly over contamination will fail within a season.
We pressure wash the entire surface before any other work begins. Where moss or algae is established on north-facing walls, we apply a mould treatment and allow it to work before rinsing. The wall is left to dry fully before any paint goes on.
Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey or Banding
Many of the interwar and postwar semis in Sticklepath, Newport, and Fremington have pebbledash on the upper half only. Working on partial pebbledash requires precise masking at the transition line.
We mask and protect smooth surfaces below and brickwork at the junction before applying paint to the textured zone. The finish at the boundary line should be sharp.
Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting
Where aggregate has detached or the surface has areas of loose or hollow render, we address these before painting begins. Loose sections are filled with a textured exterior filler or a render repair compound matched as closely as possible to the existing texture.
In North Devon’s coastal climate, freeze-thaw cycles and persistent damp are hard on pebbledash. Painting over hollow render will crack and lift as the underlying material moves.
Paint Selection for Pebbledash
We use breathable masonry paint on all pebbledash work. Breathable coatings allow moisture vapour to escape from the wall rather than trapping it behind a plastic film — essential in North Devon’s damp climate.
Pebbledash consumes 30–40% more paint per m² than smooth render. This predictable materials cost is included in our quotes.

How We Paint Pebbledash
1. Assessment
We examine the surface condition, identify detached aggregate, loose render, biological growth, and assess access requirements before quoting.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is washed. Mould treatment applied where needed and left to work before rinsing.
3. Repairs
Detached pebbles and loose render are filled. The surface is left to cure before painting.
4. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, soffits, and any adjacent brickwork or smooth render are masked.
5. First Coat
Long-pile masonry roller applied with brush work to fill crevices. Full coverage checked before leaving.
6. Second Coat
Applied once the first is fully dry, typically the following day in North Devon weather conditions.
7. Inspection and Clean-Up
All edges checked, masking removed, and any overspray touched up.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Range
Three things drive the range: property size, extent of pebbledash coverage, and surface condition.
- 3-bed terraced, pebbledash upper half only (e.g. Sticklepath or Newport): £550–£900
- 3-bed semi, pebbledash throughout (e.g. Whiddon Valley or Roundswell): £800–£1,500
- 4-bed detached, full pebbledash (e.g. Braunton or Landkey): £1,200–£2,200
- Scaffold tower hire (if required for upper storey access): £200–£400 additional
What Affects the Price
Pebbledash consumes more paint per m² than smooth render. North-facing walls with established moss and algae require treatment and dwell time before washing. Detached aggregate and hollow render sections require filling or re-rendering before painting begins.
