Render Painting in Barnstaple

Barnstaple Decorators paint rendered walls across Barnstaple and North Devon.
- Smooth and fine-textured render — roller or brush application, colour refresh or change
- Sand-and-cement and roughcast render — textured surfaces requiring thick-nap roller
- Lime render — breathable coatings essential on older stone buildings
- Hairline crack repairs — exterior filler and flexible sealant before painting
- Biological growth treatment — algae and moss removed before any paint is applied
North Devon’s Atlantic weather is hard on rendered exteriors. Salt air, persistent damp, and wide temperature swings cause paint to fade quickly. A render repaint here is not cosmetic maintenance — it is active weatherproofing.

Render Painting Services in Barnstaple
We’ve worked on rendered semis in Roundswell, lime-rendered farmhouses near Braunton, and Victorian terraces in Pilton and Sticklepath. Every render type needs the right preparation and the right product.
Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
Smooth render is the most common exterior finish on postwar housing in North Devon. The 1950s–80s semis across Bishops Tawton, Fremington, and Roundswell all have this finish.
Moving from weathered magnolia to a warm white or slate transforms how the house reads from the street. Modern breathable masonry paint is available in a wide colour range and accepts paint well when properly prepared.
Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs
Hairline cracking in render is almost universal on properties more than twenty years old. Left unpainted, these allow water ingress. Painted without filling first, the crack shows through the finish coat within a year.
We fill hairline cracks with a flexible exterior sealant or exterior filler before any paint is applied. Where render has come away from the wall or developed hollow sections, we identify these and advise on the correct repair.
Coastal and Rural Render: Lime and Traditional Finishes
North Devon has a substantial stock of stone farmhouses and period buildings rendered in lime. These are particularly common around Braunton, Bishopsnympton, and the Taw valley. Lime render breathes — it must be painted with a breathable coating.
Applying a modern plastic-based paint over lime render traps moisture and causes the render to blow. We assess the render type and advise before selecting any product.
Sand-and-Cement Render
Sand-and-cement render, sometimes called roughcast where the surface has a coarser texture, is common on the 1960s and 1970s semis across Sticklepath, Whiddon Valley, and Fremington.
We use a thick-nap roller on roughcast surfaces to ensure paint reaches the full texture, with brush work at edges and reveals.
Biological Growth Treatment
Rendered walls facing north or sheltered by overhanging vegetation develop algae, lichen, and moss growth readily in North Devon’s damp climate. We wash the surface, apply a mould treatment, allow it to dwell, then rinse.
This kills established growth at the root rather than sealing it behind paint. A thorough mould treatment before painting is especially important in coastal areas around Croyde, Braunton, and the Taw estuary villages.

K-Rend and Polymer Render Systems
K-Rend and similar polymer thin-coat render systems are common on newer-build homes in Roundswell and extended properties across Barnstaple’s outer estates.

When K-Rend Needs Painting
These systems are typically coloured in the mix and do not need painting. Some K-Rend properties develop staining, fade unevenly, or have been partly repaired in a non-matching colour and need a unified painted finish.
K-Rend can be painted with correct preparation: cleaning, treating biological growth, and applying a paint compatible with polymer render. Not all masonry paints are suitable.
Product Selection Matters
Lime-rendered properties and K-Rend systems both require specialist paint products that cost more per litre than standard masonry paint. We specify the correct product after assessing the render type.
If your K-Rend has staining or uneven fade, call us to assess whether painting is the right approach.

How We Paint Rendered Walls
1. Assessment
We examine the render surface, identify cracks, hollow sections, biological growth, and previous paint condition. Access requirements are assessed.
2. Washing
Pressure washing removes dirt, algae, and loose surface material. Mould treatment applied where needed.
3. Crack Filling and Repairs
Hairline cracks filled with flexible exterior sealant. Hollow or delaminated sections are marked, cut back, and filled before painting.
4. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, and any adjacent surfaces are masked before any paint is applied.
5. Priming
Bare or repaired areas receive a masonry primer before the finish coats.
6. Paint Application
One or two coats of breathable masonry paint applied by roller and brush.
7. Inspection
All edges, reveals, and junctions checked. Masking removed cleanly.

Render Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.
Typical Price Range
Three things drive the range: surface area, surface condition, and render type.
- 3-bed terraced, rendered front elevation only (e.g. Pilton or Sticklepath): £450–£800
- 3-bed semi, all rendered elevations (e.g. Roundswell or Bishops Tawton): £900–£1,600
- 4-bed detached, fully rendered (e.g. Braunton or Landkey): £1,400–£2,500
- Scaffolding, if required: £300–£600 additional
What Affects the Price
Surface area is measured in m² of rendered wall. Crack repairs, biological growth, and hollow sections each add preparation time. Render type matters too — lime render requires specialist breathable paint and K-Rend requires polymer-compatible products. Both add cost over standard masonry paint on sand-and-cement.
