Shed Painting Services
We cover every type of garden structure found in the region. Traditional apex sheds in Roundswell and Whiddon Valley back gardens, large timber workshops in Pilton and Sticklepath, and summerhouses in Braunton and Croyde coastal gardens. Salt air, persistent damp, and Atlantic UV exposure make regular treatment essential.

Garden Sheds
Standard garden sheds are the most common outbuilding in Barnstaple gardens, from small pent-roof storage sheds to larger apex structures. Sheds deteriorate faster than most homeowners expect in North Devon. Lap timber at the base takes moisture from the ground upwards. Salt-laden air attacks the upper boards from outside. We treat the full exterior, including roof edges, corner boards, and base boards at ground level. Door frames and door faces are treated as part of every shed job.
Timber Outbuildings
Larger timber outbuildings, including log stores, potting sheds, and utility structures, need the same treatment as sheds but often have more surface area to cover. Many outbuildings in Pilton and Sticklepath gardens are old and have multiple layers of previous treatment in varying condition. We assess the existing surface before quoting and advise on whether cleaning and overcoating is sufficient or whether a full strip back to bare timber is the better long-term option.
Summerhouses
Summerhouses appear throughout Braunton, Croyde, and the better-maintained gardens in Barnstaple’s older residential areas. They are more visible than utility sheds and often benefit from a more considered finish. We offer the full range of exterior wood stains and paints for summerhouses, including painted finishes in heritage and contemporary colours. We sand back any old paint that is failing and prime bare timber before the finish coat.
Combined Jobs and Preservative Treatment
Combining shed and fence work in one visit is more cost-effective and gives a consistent colour throughout the garden.
Shed and Fence Combined Jobs
Many homeowners in Barnstaple want their garden shed and boundary fences treated in the same visit, using the same colour product throughout. Combining shed and fence work in a single booking is more cost-effective per metre treated. We plan the job so product is applied to fencing and the shed in sequence. Colour matching across fences and shed is confirmed with the customer before we start.
Preservative Treatments
Some outbuildings, particularly those on older Barnstaple properties or coastal gardens in Ilfracombe and Croyde, need a preservative base treatment before any topcoat is applied. Preservative soaks into the timber and inhibits fungal rot and insect activity. On outbuildings showing early signs of surface greying or minor surface mould, a preservative treatment is the right first step. It extends the life of the structure significantly.

Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the full exterior, check the base boards at ground level, look at corner posts and door frames, and identify any sections showing early rot or significant paint failure. We flag anything structural before starting.
2. Cleaning
Algae, lichen, and surface dirt are brushed off and, where necessary, treated with a mould treatment before painting begins. We allow the surface to dry fully before applying product.
3. Preparation
Loose and flaking paint or old treatment is scraped and sanded back. Bare timber is primed or given a preservative treatment base coat where appropriate.
4. First Coat
Full brush application across all exterior surfaces, including the underside of roof overhang boards and the face of door frames. We do not leave any face untreated.
5. Second Coat and Finishing Details
The second coat is applied after the first has cured. Doors and window frames are finished last so they have the maximum drying time before the building is secured again.
Shed Painting Costs in Barnstaple
Prices below are estimates only. Every job is different. Call 01271 444479 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Cost
A standard garden shed typically costs £80 to £200, including preparation and two treatment coats. Size is the primary factor: a small pent-roof shed takes two to three hours while a large apex shed or summerhouse with windows and double doors takes considerably longer. Condition matters too — heavy algae, old paint layers, or deteriorating base boards all add preparation time. Finish type also affects material cost on larger structures.
Typical Ranges
Small standard shed (Roundswell or Whiddon Valley garden): £80 to £130 including preparation and two coats. Large apex shed or timber workshop (Pilton or Sticklepath): £150 to £280 depending on size and condition. Summerhouse with windows and doors (Braunton or Croyde): £200 to £400 depending on finish quality and surface area.
