Wall Painting Services
Wall painting covers more surface types and more decisions than any other interior painting service. Each surface needs a different preparation approach and a different primer before the finish coat goes on.

Interior Walls
Interior wall painting is the core of most domestic painting projects. Room by room, we cover walls in the correct primer, apply two finish coats, and cut in cleanly at ceilings, skirting boards, and all woodwork junctions. In Barnstaple’s period properties, including Victorian terraces in Pilton and Edwardian semis in Newport, interior walls are original lime plaster requiring a breathable primer. Our interior painting service covers the full scope across every room type.
Exterior Walls
North Devon’s Atlantic climate is hard on exterior walls. Render cracks with frost damage, masonry stains from biological growth, and paint films fail where moisture is trapped beneath them. We assess every exterior wall before quoting. For a complete exterior property, see our exterior painting service.
Feature Walls
A single feature wall changes a room without committing the whole space to a bold colour. The wall behind a bed, a chimney breast in a living room, or the back wall of an alcove recess are natural candidates for a contrasting or deeper shade. We advise on placement, colour, and finish during the site visit. For specialist feature wall finishes, see our feature wall painting page.
We work across all wall types in North Devon properties, indoors and out. The right primer for each surface type is specified on site.
Plasterboard, New Plaster, and Artex
New plaster and textured walls each need a specific approach. Getting it wrong causes failure within months.
Plasterboard and New Plaster
Freshly plastered walls are highly alkaline and very absorbent. Painting over new plaster with undiluted emulsion causes the paint to dry too quickly and bond poorly. We apply a sealing coat as the first coat on new plaster, then two full finish coats once completely dry. We do not rush this stage.
Textured and Artex Walls
Artex and textured finishes on walls and ceilings are common in North Devon homes built between the 1960s and 1990s. Painting textured surfaces requires the correct roller nap and paint viscosity to ensure even coating across peaks and valleys. We paint textured walls in place. Artex applied before 1985 may contain chrysotile asbestos at low levels — undisturbed and painted over, it is not a health risk. We advise clients accordingly.

Here’s How It Works
1. Surface Assessment
We identify the wall type, existing paint condition, any mould, staining, or structural defects, and the preparation required for each surface.
2. Preparation
Cracks are filled and sanded. Loose plaster is stabilised. Mould is treated with fungicidal wash before priming. New plaster is assessed for dryness before a sealing coat is applied.
3. Priming
Each surface type gets the correct primer. Lime plaster gets a breathable primer. New plaster gets a diluted sealing coat. Stained surfaces get a stain-blocking primer. Exterior masonry gets an alkali-resistant masonry primer.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats as standard. Textured surfaces get appropriate roller coverage into valleys. Wet edges are maintained throughout to prevent lap marks.
5. Inspection and Walkthrough
All surfaces are checked in good light. Touch-ups are completed. We walk through with you before leaving.

What Drives the Cost
Wall painting costs depend on the type of wall, the extent of preparation, and whether the job is interior or exterior. Three things drive the price: wall type and condition (new plasterboard is fast to prime and paint; original lime plaster in poor condition needs significant preparation), surface area (more wall equals more time and more material), and finish complexity (a plain flat colour in a single room is the most economical option; feature wall effects, two-tone colour schemes, and textured finishes all add time).
Typical Ranges
Single interior room (modern walls, one colour): £250 to £450. Period interior room (lime plaster, preparation included): £350 to £600. Exterior elevation (masonry or render, ground floor only): £400 to £800 depending on area.
