Why Choose Barnstaple Decorators

Coastal Timber Specialists

Atlantic salt air and North Devon’s Atlantic weather accelerate deck wear faster than almost anywhere inland. We prepare and protect exterior timber: boards, posts, and balustrades. We use products suited to coastal exposure, with anti-slip finish included as standard on steps.

Clear Pricing

Fixed price from the first quote. No unexpected additions.

Fully Insured

Full public liability cover on every job.

Highly Recommended

Most of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals.

Deck Painting Services

We work on all types of decking found in the region — pressure-treated softwood decks in Roundswell back gardens and hardwood balcony decking on Ilfracombe hillside properties. Atlantic weather accelerates deck wear. We know how to prepare and protect timber facing North Devon’s salt air and UV exposure.

Decking Boards

Decking boards are the hardest-worked surface on any deck. Green algae builds up quickly in damp conditions, making boards slippery. We pressure-wash and treat algae before any product is applied. Two full treatment coats are standard on all decking board work.

Balustrades and Posts

We treat post bases and the end grain at the top of each post with particular care. For elevated decks on Ilfracombe or Croyde coastal properties, this detail work matters even more given the salt-laden air. For exterior painting across your whole property, see our exterior painting page.

Steps and Handrails

We treat stair treads with anti-slip additive as standard where steps are exterior-facing. Handrails are stripped back to sound timber where old paint or varnish is flaking. All paintwork on steps is allowed to cure fully before we reopen access.

Deck Staining, Paint, and Anti-Slip Finishes

Deck staining and deck paint give different finishes and suit different situations. Anti-slip additive is included as standard on all exterior-facing steps.

Deck Staining vs Paint

Penetrating stain soaks into the timber, feeds the grain, and will not peel — the most practical option for most Barnstaple and Braunton properties. Exterior deck paint forms a film and suits older decks where timber has already been painted. For timber treatment more broadly, see our wood painting page.

Anti-Slip Finishes

A smooth deck paint or worn stain finish becomes dangerous in wet conditions — particularly true on exposed North Devon properties facing the coast. We incorporate non-slip additive into top coats on all exterior-facing deck surfaces. The additive adds a fine texture that dramatically improves grip when wet without significantly changing the colour.

Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

We inspect the deck and identify any boards with rot or significant damage. We also check that balustrade posts are structurally sound. We flag anything that needs replacing before painting starts.

2. Cleaning

Decks are pressure-washed to remove algae, dirt, and any loose material. We allow the deck to dry fully before applying any product — typically at least 24 hours in dry weather.

3. Preparation

Old paint or varnish that is failing is stripped or sanded back to sound timber. End grain on posts and board edges is given additional attention at this stage.

4. First Coat

Full brush application on all surfaces, including the edges of boards, balustrade joints, and post bases. Penetration into the grain matters more than surface coverage speed.

5. Second Coat and Anti-Slip

The second coat is applied after full cure of the first. Anti-slip additive is incorporated at this stage on steps and any surfaces specified in the brief.

What Drives the Cost

Deck size and complexity affect the price most — a simple rectangular boards job is priced per metre run, while decks with wrap-around balustrades, multiple levels, or integrated steps take considerably longer. Condition matters: algae-covered or previously painted decks require more preparation. Access also affects cost on elevated or planted-adjacent decks.

Typical Ranges

Garden deck, 15 square metres (Roundswell or Whiddon Valley): £200 to £300 including anti-slip on any steps. Deck with balustrade and steps, 25 square metres (Braunton or coastal property): £350 to £550. Balcony deck only, no ground-level access (Ilfracombe hillside): £180 to £280.
